Where To Ride Your Bike

Near most beach-facing St. Augustine rentals sits some utterly captivating places to go on a bike ride. We cover our top three historic city bike trails.

Anastasia State Park

Anastasia State Park is St. Augustine’s most popular park destination. It attracts kayakers, hikers, fishers, and nature lovers of all kinds. Camping is available for those who want to rough it. The park is surrounded by the Matanzas River from its west and the Atlantic on its east, so there are always sensational water views to admire. While not necessarily challenging, the park bike trail is long and winding. Most of it is paved so you shouldn’t be too concerned about off-road and uneven terrain.

Entrance is just $2 for bicyclists and $5 for vehicles with two to eight passengers for the day. The park closes at dusk.

Stokes Landing Conservation Area

The Stokes Landing Trail is a delightful path through an ambitious and protected conservation. The trail is a 1.4-mile loop and recommended for beginner to intermediate bicyclists. We recommend a nice off-road bike for some of the more uneven terrains. The trail carries you beside the Tolomato River and is part of the 73,000-acre Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve.

If you take the whole trail, you’ll spot an observation tower. Keep an eye out for wildlife, like barred owls, red-tailed hawks, and even otters.

St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop

The St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop is utterly massive. Tackling the entire trail is an ambitious endeavor and only recommended for highly experienced cyclists.

With that said, it is an impressive 260-mile loop through the bulk of northeast Florida’s coastline, capturing numerous state parks, at least three national monuments, multiple springs, and even the Kennedy Space Center!

Due to the lack of amenities, we recommend the trail for experienced bicyclists willing to get off the beaten path. Consider camping at the state parks or taking a weekend trip. The trail can be entered at multiple points from the space coast up to Jacksonville, as it is part of the East Coast Greenway. Visit the website for additional details as it pertains to your travel plans.

The above are just three of the coolest bike trails in the city. But there’s no shortage of places to bike to experience the best of the city. We suggest avoiding major roads for your safety. Fortunately, the interior of the city’s downtown is quite bike-friendly due to small roads unfavorable to motorized vehicles. You can often get bikes dropped off at your rental and even picked up at the end of your vacation.

Take A Bike Tour

Most rental providers offer year-round tours to many of the city’s top attractions, like the Fountain of Youth, the Old Jail, St. George St, the Castillo de San Marcos, and more. It’s a rewarding way to see the city while avoiding traffic and parking. Bike rentals also offer discounts to top attractions and all the biking gear you may need.

For bike tours, we highly recommend St. Augustine Bike Rentals. Bicycle tours are $30 per person and can even be booked within a week prior to the tour, pending scheduling.
